On Set with the “LIONESS
OF LISABI” March 23-31
2008
The
Lioness of LisabI is a
coming of age story set
in Nigeria in the
1940’s. A young girl,
daughter of the head
market vendor, learns to
question and confront
the traditional fears
and domination of the
male in her society.
Written and executive
produced by Stephanie
Shonekan, professor of
Black Studies at
Columbia College,
Chicago, ‘The Lioness’
was shot on location in
the Santa Cruz valley
where an African market
place was recreated for
this scene. Ms. Shonekan,
enthusiastically
comments that this is an
excellent location for
her
Production, as it
authentically reflected
the 1940’s era in
Nigeria which is crucial
to the realism of her
film.
The main actors were all
professionals from the
Chicago area and the
Director,
cinematographer, and
several other key crew
members were students or
alumni also from
Columbia College.
Local production crew
and extras were employed
over the week long shoot
and the 20 minute film
is expected to be
completed over the next
few months.
